Taking Mom to Jiaoxi on a day off: a weekday getaway with a night in a private onsen room and a morning yoga class

Joanne works shifts at a hospital and can only take time off on weekdays. On HAOTIVA, she lined up a private onsen room, a private bath and the next morning's yoga class in one go, then took her mom, who doesn't get out much, to Yilan for a night.

When you work shifts, weekdays are your only days out

Joanne is a nurse at a regional hospital in Xindian. She rotates through three shifts, and her days off rarely fall on a weekend. Her mom is in her sixties and has bad knees, and whenever an outing comes up, the first thing she says is, "Nothing too tiring." In the past, taking her mom for a hot spring soak meant opening a pile of browser tabs: first finding a place with a private bath, then checking for nearby classes suited to older adults, and finally piecing the timing together herself — when to check in, when the class starts and whether they'd make it before check-out.

This time, she opened the HAOTIVA home page. Above the search box are three toggles: "Stay + Experience," "Stays only" and "Experiences only." She stayed on the default, "Stay + Experience," because what she wanted wasn't just a room but a trip with time to rest already built in.

Top of the home page: the search box switches between "Stay + Experience," "Stays only" and "Experiences only." On the line below, you can describe your trip in one sentence and click "Plan" to hand it to the Smart Planner.

Hand one sentence to the Smart Planner, then take a closer look yourself

Under the search box there is a field you can type into directly, plus a few "Right now I want" shortcuts, one of which reads "With my parents". Tap it and the Smart Planner fills in the request "Hot springs with my parents, nothing tiring, two days", then draws on partners and hotels that are already listed to suggest a combination of a stay and experiences. The amount is a reference total of each venue's starting price; each item still has to be booked and paid for separately with the venue.

Joanne didn't take the suggestion as it was. She went back to the stay-plus-experience packages on the home page and opened "Jiaoxi | One night in a cypress private onsen room + morning flow yoga" to read it closely. The first paragraph on the listing says it all: soak, then sleep in until you wake naturally, do 60 minutes of flow yoga in the garden at 7:00, and have breakfast delivered to the room. Below the title are Yilan, the duration of "1 night + 60 minutes" and the intensity label.

All on one page: the onsen room, the private bath and the next morning's class

"What's included" is spelled out in detail, and that's what she cared about most. When you travel with an older parent, the worst thing is getting there and finding it's not what you pictured.

Further down is "Itinerary," a timeline listing check-in at 15:00 on Day 1, dinner at 18:30 (on your own or as an add-on), the yoga time slot on Day 2 and check-out at 11:00 with luggage storage available. For her, the timeline was like a dry run of the two days: what time Mom should head out, whether to book dinner separately, whether they could rest a little longer before check-out — it answered all of it.

She also checked the intensity and who the class suits. This flow yoga class is marked "Gentle" and matched to the wellness goals "De-stress" and "Sleep better." Her mom doesn't need to know any yoga; she just needs to stretch slowly along with her breath.

  • 50 minutes in a private hot spring bath
  • Morning flow yoga, 60 minutes (small class of 8)
  • Japanese-Western breakfast in your room

Choosing among three plans: the weekday-only rate is just right for shift workers

This bundle has three plans. The standard onsen room starts at NT$6,880 for two, with breakfast and yoga for both. The mountain-view onsen room starts at NT$9,480 and adds a larger terrace and a kaiseki dinner. The weekday-only plan starts at NT$5,980, with check-in limited to Sunday through Thursday. Joanne's day off happened to be a Tuesday, so the weekday-only plan was easier on the wallet and avoided the weekend crowds.

Open the dates and the calendar shows each day's price right on it. Fridays and Saturdays are usually higher, so it's easy to compare at a glance. She picked a Tuesday check-in, and the system filled in check-out for the next day. The booking card on the right then asked her to choose a time for the Day 2 experience: 07:00 or 08:30. Since her mom is slow to get going in the morning, she chose 08:30.

It works just as smoothly on a phone. On mobile the photos swipe left and right, the current amount stays pinned at the bottom, and it updates when you change the date or time slot. She checked all of this in the break room after her shift.

I didn't want to be standing there telling Mom, 'Hang on, let me check what time we have to be there.' This time, the whole schedule was set before we left the house.

Read the exclusions first, then decide whether to book

Many people only look at what's included when booking a room, but HAOTIVA listings have a separate "Exclusions & restrictions" section, and it's direct: the price shown on the page already includes everything HAOTIVA charges you, nothing is added after you order, and anything you need to pay for on site is listed under "Not included." This bundle doesn't include round-trip transportation, meals not listed in the plan or add-on experiences chosen separately. The restrictions state that the experience time must be chosen before check-in, that check-in is at 15:00 and that check-out is at 11:00.

Free cancellation is shown in the four info boxes at the top of the page; for this bundle, it's up to 3 days before. Based on the dates you pick, the bottom of the booking card also works out exactly which day you can cancel for free until. For shift workers, that line matters: if her shifts get changed at the last minute, she knows the latest day she has to decide.

The page also lists experiences from other nearby venues, each booked separately, such as an aromatherapy oil massage in Taipei's East District and a sauna and cold spring in Beitou. Joanne didn't add one this time, but she made a note of them, planning to take her mom for a massage in Taipei next month.

Before you book, the terms once more

At the bottom of the listing there is a "Cancellation & notes" block that lists the key terms once more: how long before use you can cancel for a full refund to the original payment method; that if the place doesn't match the page, HAOTIVA support deals with a refund or alternative first; and that when bad weather affects an outdoor trip, the venue contacts you to reschedule or refund in full. For special requests she can first use the "Ask the host" link on the listing, and she planned to ask, "My elderly companion has bad knees, so please put us near the entrance for yoga." When you try to book an item marked "Demo", you see "Demo items can't be booked or paid for" and are pointed to listed partners where you can book directly.

After the stay, the trip also earns Sunlight points under the published rules: one point for every NT$100 spent, multiplied by a rate that depends on your member tier. Sunlight points are reward points; they can't be transferred or cashed out, and they can't be redeemed against a payment yet.

  • Traveling with older parents? Check the intensity label and the "Good for" field first; "Gentle" or below is the safer bet.
  • The private bath is a fixed 50 minutes. Confirm your time slot with the front desk at check-in so dinner is easier to plan.
  • If you can choose your days off, compare weekday and weekend prices day by day right on the calendar.

What you can do now

HAOTIVA is currently in pre-launch and still adding partners. Partners that are already listed can take bookings and payments online, while the products, plans and prices in this article are items marked "Demo": they are for display only and can't be booked or paid for. Actual partner terms and prices are as shown on each venue's own page.

Right now you can take the Health Travel Persona quiz so the home page recommendations follow your habits, or browse the "Partner venues" page for listed venues you can book directly. For a weekday getaway like Joanne's, finding, comparing, planning and paying can all happen in one place, and when something goes wrong on the trip there is a real person on the Chinese-language support line.
