Four nights of meetings in Taipei, in from Singapore: turning a city hotel into a base for real recovery

Mei Ling works in compliance in Singapore and comes to Taipei on business every quarter. This time, she used HAOTIVA to pick a design hotel with a 24-hour gym, then fit an aromatherapy massage into the evening after her meetings wrapped up.

What wears you out on a business trip often isn't the work itself

Mei Ling works in compliance at a financial institution in Singapore and comes to Taipei once a quarter for a regional meeting. She says the most tiring part of a business trip has never been the meetings; it's all the little decisions: where to stay so she's close to the venue, whether she'll still have the energy to work out in the evening and whether she can actually sleep well back in her room. In the past, she usually just booked a chain hotel and left it at that, and she always flew home to Singapore more tired than when she left.

This time she first took the quiz in HAOTIVA's sign-up flow. At the "Let's get to know you" step she chose Singapore as her home city, and the interface language and display currency were preset to match. The site recommends destinations by distance and time difference, and the destination cards on the home page switch to "From Singapore", each showing the approximate flight time, local sunrise time and whether there is a time difference from her city. Taipei and Singapore are in the same time zone, which is handy for someone who has to dial into meetings.

Top of the home page: a carousel of featured picks up top, and below it a search box where you can choose a destination, dates and number of guests, or plan a trip in one sentence.

Stays only: filtering down to city hotels first

For this trip she only needed a place to stay, so she switched the search box to "Stays only" and entered Taipei as the destination. On the left side of the search results page, you can filter by type, theme, fitness and wellness goals, max intensity and price, and you can also tick "Free cancellation only." A summary line above the results tells you how many results there are and the average price. Switch to map view and every place is pinned on the map; hover over the list and the matching marker lights up.

Cards for stays show "Pay at venue" and the free cancellation deadline, which made it easy for her to check them against her company's travel policy. If you'd rather not filter yourself, there's also "Re-plan in one sentence" to the right of the summary line, which hands the job straight to the Smart Planner.

Search results page: at the top are partner venues that are already listed, below them "Featured samples" lists demo itineraries, with filters such as type on the left and a map marking each place on the right.

The high-rise design hotel in Xinyi: the four things she checked

In the end, she chose "Xinyi, Taipei | High-rise design hotel with city views." The first line of the listing reads: floor-to-ceiling windows facing Taipei 101, the MRT right downstairs, good for both business trips and weekend getaways. For her, these were the things that actually decided it.

There are two plans: the view double room starts at NT$4,280 without breakfast, and the view double room with breakfast starts at NT$4,860, including breakfast for two. She chose the plan with breakfast, since her meetings start at 8:30 am. The calendar works as a date range, so you pick check-in and check-out in one go, with each night's price listed separately; Fridays and Saturdays are usually higher. She checked in on a Monday and out on a Friday, so all four nights fell on weekdays.

  • What's included: a room with a view, a 24-hour gym, self-service laundry and high-speed Wi-Fi. For four nights, that's two fewer sets of workout clothes to pack.
  • What's not included: breakfast (unless you choose the plan with breakfast), parking at NT$400/night and an extra bed at NT$800/night, all spelled out under "Exclusions & restrictions."
  • Check-in rules: check-in at 15:00, check-out at 11:00, and ID is required at check-in.
  • Cancellation deadline: free cancellation up to 3 days before, and the booking card works out the last day based on your dates.

Adding recovery to the trip: "Add an experience" and "Also on this trip"

The hotel's product page also recommends nearby experiences: a small-group Pilates core-bed class in Da'an (55 minutes, NT$1,200) and a full-body aromatherapy oil massage in the East District (90 minutes, NT$2,280). These are offered by each venue itself, and you book and pay for them separately with that venue; the booking card lists only the hotel's amount.

She added the aromatherapy massage and picked the 19:30 slot on Thursday evening — the day her meetings ended earliest. The spa starts with 10 minutes of talking through the scents you like and the areas you want to relax, blends the oils and then begins, with a cup of herbal tea afterward. The restrictions for massages are spelled out too: arrive 10 minutes early, and let them know in advance if you're pregnant or have broken skin or allergies.

At the very bottom of the page there is also a section called "Plan more on the same trip", listing other choices in the same city or of the same type. She made a note of the Finnish sauna in Beitou for the next time she stays a weekend longer.

Business trips used to mean squeezing myself into the gaps in my calendar. This time, I scheduled rest first, then the meetings.

Currency: prices are in NT$, and foreign currencies are just for convenience

The booking flow at listed venues asks for your contact details; for travellers from overseas, it's worth checking that the name matches your ID and that the contact method is one you can actually receive. If you pay online, the card number is entered on the payment provider's page, and HAOTIVA neither handles nor stores the full card number. Items marked "Demo" can't be booked or paid for: pressing book shows an explanation and points you to listed partners.

Although the site showed her prices in Singapore dollars, every listing is priced in TWD; foreign currency amounts are reference conversions only, and the TWD amount at checkout is what counts. She actually found this clearer: when filing expenses, she doesn't have to guess which day's exchange rate was used.

If something goes wrong during the trip, who do you turn to?

The worst thing about being abroad is having no one to reach when something happens. HAOTIVA's support and help page lists four platform promises: support agents handle requests daily from 08:00 to 24:00, with a real person replying within 30 minutes; anything that requires contacting the venue is handled by the platform, not passed off to the venue; every listing states what's not included, and the price doesn't go up after you order; and refunds go back to your original payment method, with progress visible in "My bookings."

Every booking page also has a "Get help with this booking" button, and the support ticket carries the booking number, so you don't have to explain again what you booked.

Help centre: choose which booking it is about and then describe the problem; questions that aren't about a booking are grouped below, and at the bottom are the four platform promises and common questions.

A note on pre-launch

HAOTIVA is currently adding partners one by one. Partners that are already listed can take bookings and payments online, while the hotel, add-on experiences and prices in this article are items marked "Demo": they are for display only and can't be booked or paid for. Actual partners, room types and prices are as shown on each venue's own page, and the platform promises apply to bookings made through HAOTIVA.

If you also travel between Asian cities for work, you can start by finishing the quiz and setting your home city and display currency, then browse the venues already listed on the "Partner venues" page. Until demo items open for booking, you can also use them to practise comparing prices and reading cancellation terms.
